Double Major Agreements

TCNJ allows up to three courses to count between majors for students who elect to double major. These courses can be crosslisted, or courses the departments have agreed upon. The sociology and anthropology department has drawn agreements with several other departments to enhance a student’s ability to double major.

Important Notes:

  • These agreements only apply to students who are double majors in the two listed programs. Single majors cannot apply these courses to their respective majors.
  • This list is not a substitute for meeting with your advisor.
  • Topics courses can sometimes be double counted by permission of the other department’s chair.

Sociology and History

  • Sociology 101 will count in place of the 100-level gateway course for the History major
  • Students can count one of the following 300-Level Sociology Courses toward the History Major: SOC303, SOC317, SOC320, SOC345, SOC374, SOC375
  • Students can count one of the following 300-Level History Courses toward the Sociology Major: HIS305, HIS306, HIS324, HIS327, HIS351, HIS352, HIS359, HIS373, HIS375, HIS384, HIS385, HIS388

Four Year Sequence

Listed is an outline for completing a double major in sociology and history. This is only a suggested order for taking the courses and students are not committed to taking the courses in this particular order. Three courses may double-count between the two majors: SOC 101 and two 300-level electives (one history, one sociology/anthropology). AP test scores and/or transfer credit may allow for course waiver for some College Core requirements.

Sociology (SOC) and Psychology

SOC is a great second major choice for students interested in careers in areas such as social work or public policy/administration. You will get a broader perspective on how communities, cultures, and societies influence human behavior in ways that complement your person-focused training in Psychology. Additionally, you will get exposure to different research methods and analysis strategies used in the social sciences.

  • Sociology will accept PSY203 for their STA215 requirement.
  • Sociology will accept any two of PSY215, PSY324, PSY337, PSY341, PSY355, PSY370 (Dr. Onyewuenyi’s section) with approval for their electives.
  • Psychology will accept STA215 to satisfy the PSY203 requirement.
  • Psychology will accept any one SOC205, SOC281, SOC317, SOC303, SOC333, SOC335, SOC356, SOC374, or SOC385 to satisfy the “Psychology Option” portion of our major.
