An interview with Landen

What was your hometown when you came to TCNJ?

Ijamsville, Maryland

Where do you currently call your hometown?

Frederick, Maryland

When you were studying here, where did you picture yourself after graduation?

I knew I was committed to social and economic justice causes, but I was not certain on whether that be within research, programming, or advocacy/policy. In my role at United Way, I am thankful to do a bit of all three as I continue to discover what fulfills me the most.

What was your first job after graduating?

Program Coordinator at United Way of Frederick County

How do you use your Sociology degree in your current career and other activities?

SOC first taught me the role a nonprofit could play to address community needs, and ever since I knew I wanted to begin my career with a nonprofit organization. I attribute so much of my work style and approach to my SOC (and WGSS) degrees. Day to day, I utilize my foundation in mezzo and macro social service work to identify barriers and service gaps for low-to-moderate income families, equitably implement programs, and advocate to local policymakers for affordable cost of living solutions.

What is your favorite "major memory" from your time as a Sociology student?

I loved building close relationships and learning from the passions of my fellow SOC/ ANT majors such as in everyone's research projects in 302 and work experiences in Capstone internships. I also value the abundance of opportunities we had for community engagement within internships and projects. My favorites were with United Way, HiTOPS, TASK, and NJCASA.

What is some advice you would give to your undergraduate self?

Take advantage of as many classes that interest you as possible. Get involved with clubs, service, and new friendships to the fullest.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I am always happy to connect with current students and alum about shared passions in this work and navigating the post-grad environment together.
