An interview with Johanna

What was your hometown when you came to TCNJ?

Hackensack, NJ

Where do you currently call your hometown?

Hackensack, NJ

When you were studying here, where did you picture yourself after graduation?

I considered law school or something related in immigration.

What was your first job after graduating?

Credentialing Coordinator - St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in NYC

How do you use your Sociology degree in your current career and other activities?

Everything I do is connected to my Soc/Ant studies. I use data to better understand communities I serve, constantly figuring out how to best address the needs of diverse communities across the state. Various factors impact my work - demographic shifts, cultural competence, language accessibility, policy and political trends, international crises, social conflicts, community networks, and more.

What is your favorite "major memory" from your time as a Sociology student?

Summer project - Ethnographic study in Chambersburg in Trenton

What is some advice you would give to your undergraduate self?

Trust the process and don’t get too focused on what happens right after graduation. Follow your passion.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Career paths are not linear, every job will teach you something and every skill is transferable.
